It was a chance comment between the L-Sound team, one night during a Skype business meeting. As is usual when you get three audio enthusiasts chatting, no matter how business minded, the conversation can wander a bit off-topic.
We were bemoaning how, in one way or another, many products that are good, could be great ‘if only’. You know the sort of thing we’re talking about. Things like; why did they spend all that money doing this, and then only fit an ‘X’ - insert a cheap component of your choice. Or why does everything have to come in gloss when some people would prefer matt, so you can’t see your screen reflecting in it. Or that’s a cute speaker, but it will need a stand that won’t be. Or, or, or….
This led onto the way we could be subjected to the whims of manufacturer production run availability, product reliability, wacky global pricing disparities, products not turning up at all and worst of all, why many products just seemed to ignore engineering basics that we, as engineering minded types, just got really annoyed by. Some of this annoys our customers too, but ALL of it annoys us!
The comment that was the germ of a seed was “Why don’t we make our own?”. We know the best people to involve in design and manufacture, we’ll be cutting out the middle man (which has been a core philosophy of L-Sound since it’s inception) to deliver greater value, we’ll get designs that can look great without being subject to the whims of fashion and best of all, we can get custom built everything, rather than stuffing boxes with other peoples parts and crucially, we’ll be able to deliver them when we want to. Vapour ware is not allowed.
Of course, this wasn’t going to happen overnight. It’s taken over two years of research, listening to a wide range of available technologies, design proposals, refinement of ideas, more listening, further refinement and now we feel we have arrived, but there were a number of core requirements we stuck to, no matter what.
Reliability. It has to be, end of story. It has to be robust enough to take continuous high volume use in it’s stride, all day, every day and sound damn good while doing it.
Engineering. Nothing would be included that didn’t make sense in acoustic engineering terms. Many tweeter types and topologies were discounted. When it came down to the raw measurements, they simply weren’t accurate, or robust, or worse, used worrying levels of euphonic distortion to deliver their ‘magic’. Indeed, it kept coming back to employing tried and trusted technologies, but with the flexibility to manufacture exactly what was needed to suit the way it would be used.
Room Independence. All of the best designs we have heard and used, are also the most consistent from one room to the next. This is no coincidence. Controlling the dispersion of sound radiated in directions that are not pointing directly at the listening seats, is absolutely key to achieving a consistent quality of reproduction in different rooms and ensuring that all of the main listening positions can be equally well served.
Quality. A natural partner to reliability, quality is really in the detail. There are no plastic terminal trays on the rear of our speakers. In fact, plastics are absolutely absent in any place where they don’t make an active contribution to sound quality. There will be no gold plating disguising steel connectors. Our hidden magnets will invisibly hold the grills in place no matter how loud you’re playing. Now, we probably could have cheap-skated a few detail corners for no performance loss, but we wanted something that not only made us proud to have it in our systems, but also proud to put a product with our name on it in your listening room.
Value. Arendal Sound products ship directly from us to you, all over the world. We could have inflated the price so our speakers and subwoofers sat shoulder to shoulder with products of apparently similar cost. We could make a lot of money doing that. But that’s not the ethos of L-Sound and it’s definitely not the ethos of our first in-house products. We were determined to keep tight control so you would buy a quality of component, quality of construction and quality of finish that you will not find at anything close to the price. As we have done before, we challenge the market to come up to our level, not us sink to theirs.
Service. And that bold value claim is demonstrated in our 60 day Buy & Try and massive warranties offering 10 years on mechanical components and cabinets, with 5 years on electronic components. No other manufacturer has the confidence to let you enjoy and play with a product for a full two months, for no greater risk than the cost of return shipping and we’ve even capped that to a minimum for our customers.
We are aiming high with the 1723 Series and feel we have hit our targets and then some. But they are just the beginning...
